Abstract
Objective This study evaluates and compares the effect of the treatment of comminuted tibia fractures using minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis(MIPO) techniques with traditional method. Methods We compare the results of 30 patients treated by MIPO and 30 patients treated by traditional open reduction for tibia fractures, which are classified according to the AO system. After indirect reduciton, the plate is inserted into thc subcutaneous extraperiosteal tunnel on the medial side of tibia and is fixed percutaneously proximal and distal to the fracture. Results The mean time to callus formation in MIPO group is 8.3 weeks and to union is 14.3 weeks,in traditional group is 10.2 weeks and 18.7 weeks. All patients in MIPO group have subsequently returned to their pre-injury occupations/level of activity. Conclusion MIPO is an effective treatment for closed comminuted fractures of tibia, avoiding the complications associated with traditional methods. It is the representation of the trend of biological osteosynthesis.
