Abstract

Aims & Objectives: Poor prescribing habits negatively impact on prescribing practice and often cause medication prescribing related adverse events. We demonstrated targeted intensive training for ‘golden prescribing rules’ enhance medical trainees’ prescribing knowledge. This study aims to determine if enhancing medical trainees’ prescribing knowledge also improve their prescribing practice. Methods A prospective study was conducted over a 6 months period. 20 prescriptions are selected randomly for investigations at the 3 study periods (the baseline before delivering targeted intensive training for ‘golden prescribing rules’, and at 1 and 3 months after training), and they are scored against the ‘golden prescribing rules’ to determine if targeted intensive training enhance the quality of prescriptions. Results Of the 20 prescriptions studied at the baseline, only 20% fulfilled the ‘golden prescribing rules’. Following targeted intensive training, 82% and 90% of prescriptions studied at 1 and 3 months respectively fulfilled the ‘golden prescribing rules’. Conclusions Targeted intensive training for ‘golden prescribing rules’ successfully enhanced the quality of prescriptions in our PICU throughout medical trainees’ 6-month rotation. Further studies are needed to determine if it is effective in future groups of trainees.
