Sources and effects of ionizing radiation

Abstract

This report summarizes the developments in radiation science in the years leading up to the new millennium. It draws on the main conclusion of the scientific assessments of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effect of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). This volume presents the effects of atomic radiation by providing findings on: DNA repair and mutagenesis; biological effects at low radiation doses; combined effects of radiation and other agents; epidemiological evaluation of radiation-induced cancer; exposures and effects of the Chernobyl accident. The publication serves as a unique scientific basis for estimating radiation risk, establishing radiation protection and safety standards and regulating radiation sources. It is recommended for government officials, scientists, medical specialists and others who are concerned about the possible hazards of natural and man-made sources of radiation.
