An Overview of Data Privacy in Healthcare in the Current Age

Abstract

This chapter aims to provide an updated overview of the privacy of medical data, showing its successful relationship with other technologies, with a bibliographic background, refining and sharpening the potential of applied technology in health. In the same sense as dealing with digital privacy in the age of current technology, it is essential to understand and know the fate of data in the world outside the domain of an individual, whether they are users or even specifically patients. The responsibility for the protection of privacy of patient data rests with everyone, concerning the impact on patients’ digital privacy, healthcare professionals, and the technical management of the IT infrastructure. Data encryption applied to healthcare is a powerful and reliable way to guarantee privacy. Respect for privacy must be maintained, given the occurrence of the leakage of health data for other purposes, through messages by chat applications to friends or a group of contacts.
