Abstract
Artificial intelligence is devoted to developing “intelligent” software and machines capable of learning, reasoning, perception, and movement. The field frequently suffers from exaggerated claims as to its immediate promise or detriment to humanity. In practice, artificial intelligence is a set of powerful tools that facilitate a convergent approach to complex problems. Artificial intelligence—more specifically, machine learning—is critical to capitalizing on big data, the high-volume, high-dimensionality data sets generated by advanced biological, clinical, and mobile technologies. This chapter provides an overview to the key concepts of artificial intelligence as well as a primer to the field’s core methods. A discussion follows as to how these techniques may address notable challenges within mental health with select examples from the literature. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of training, technical, and ethical considerations in implementation.
