Abstract
Publications in academic journals are essential to share study results with the scientific community. Next to international anatomical journals, there are also several national journals published by anatomical societies and institutions. The aim of the current study was to identify these journals and investigate their characteristics.A total of 41 national journals from countries all over the world were identified. With seven national journals, the United States was the country with the most journals. The large majority of the national anatomy were published by an anatomical society. For about half of the journals, an impact factor was available. Additionally, about half the journals was full open access.Further research is needed to elucidate the specific characteristics of the identified journals. Additionally, further comparisons should be made between the characteristics of these journals and international anatomy journals and national journals in other disciplines. These studies will provide further insights into the specific position of these journals in the publishing landscape, which will provide information for authors to select a suitable publishing venue for their work.
