Abstract
As the number of retractions continues to rise, an analysis of the reasons behind them becomes more pressing. The unique dataset (n= 473 retracted articles) provided by the ‘Retraction Watch’ blog provides insight into the causes of such retractions and the underlying trends behind them. Results reveal that the reasons for retractions lead to significant variations in the time-to-retraction. Impact factor and single-authorship reduce time-to-retraction. Only 11.4% of retractions in the sample are determined to be caused by research error. The common overestimation of research error (or ‘honest error’) as a reason for retractions is due to the vagueness of retraction notices. This has implications for the integrity of science as well as research on retractions.
