Abstract
The growth of AI in clinical medicine is impacting all aspects of care, with important implications for physician practice. The growth of AI includes consumer-grade AI and medical-grade AI, which perform work with different levels of autonomy across the care continuum. This raises questions about what the future of the patient–physician relationship will look like, such as: Will the adoption of AI be helpful or detrimental to patient health? Will AI possibly dehumanize the practice of medicine? How will patient–physician relationships evolve with AI? How will the role of the physician evolve with the adoption of AI? In this chapter, we examine current and potential future impacts and risks of AI using examples, and discuss how patient–physician relationships might evolve. We propose ways for physicians, patients, families, and caregivers to become involved in the development of AI.
