Abstract
Background Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a large field of transdisciplinary science that enables machines to mimic intelligent human behavior. AI demonstrates impressive advances in performing rudimentary cognitive functions as well as exceeding in simulating much more complex cognitive tasks, being an important tool in orthognathic surgery. Methods A search of the PubMed database was conducted to identify relevant studies on AI in orthognathic surgery. The literature was reviewed to discuss clinical approaches utilizing AI.Results Studies included in this review reported computer-aided surgical simulation, identification of anatomical structures, differential diagnosis of orthodontic-only versus orthodontic-surgical treatment, facial attractiveness and improvements on orthognathic surgery safety and its correlation to AI.Conclusion AI-based tools can significantly contribute to many areas related to orthognathic surgery.
