Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) stands for AI. AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think, learn and problem solve such as humans. The goal of AI is to develop systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making and language translation. AI is making significant strides in dentistry, contributing to advancements in diagnosis, treatment planning, patient management and overall efficiency within dental practices. AI has remarkably increased its presence and significance in a wide range of sectors, including dentistry. It can mimic the intelligence of humans to undertake complex predictions and decision-making in the health care sector, particularly in endodontics. The models of AI, such as convolutional neural networks and/or artificial neural networks, have shown a variety of applications in endodontics, including studying the anatomy of the root canal system, forecasting the viability of stem cells of the dental pulp, measuring working lengths, pinpointing root fractures and periapical lesions and forecasting the success of retreatment procedures. Future applications of this technology were considered in relation to scheduling, patient care, drug–drug interactions, prognostic diagnosis and robotic endodontic surgery. DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING Diagnostic imaging in dentistry refers to the use of various imaging techniques to visualise and diagnose oral and maxillofacial conditions. These images provide valuable information that aids dentists and oral health care professionals in making accurate diagnoses, treatment planning and monitoring the progression of dental issues. AI algorithms can analyse radiographic images, such as X-rays and cone-beam computed tomography scans, to aid in the early detection of dental issues such as cavities, periodontal diseases and anomalies. AI assists in identifying abnormalities in dental images, helping dentists make more accurate and timely diagnoses. TREATMENT PLANNING AI systems can analyse patient data to predict the progression of diseases and suggest personalised treatment plans. AI assists in orthodontic treatment planning as well as planning complex procedures such as implant placement, ensuring optimal outcomes. ROBOTICS IN DENTISTRY AI-powered robots are used in dental surgeries to enhance precision and accuracy, particularly in tasks such as implant placement. NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING Natural language processing allows for the development of voice-activated systems that facilitate hands-free access to patient records, treatment plans and other information. PATIENT MANAGEMENT AI-powered chatbots can handle routine patient inquiries, appointment scheduling and provide basic information, improving overall patient management. AI facilitates remote consultations and monitoring of patients, enhancing accessibility to dental care. PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS AI models analyse patient data to predict the risk of developing certain oral conditions, enabling preventive measures to be implemented. Data management AI streamlines the management of electronic health records, making it easier for dentists to access and interpret patient information. Personalised treatment AI helps tailor treatment plans based on individual patient characteristics, improving the precision and effectiveness of interventions. Artificial intelligence-powered educational tools Interactive tools using AI help educate patients about oral health, treatment options and proper oral hygiene practices. Research and development AI is used to accelerate the discovery of new materials and compounds for dental treatments and therapies. Biometric authentication AI contributes to securing patient data through biometric authentication methods, enhancing privacy and preventing unauthorised access. While AI is proving to be a valuable tool in dentistry, it is essential to ensure ethical considerations, patient privacy and ongoing collaboration between AI systems and human professionals to provide optimal dental care. As technology continues to advance, the integration of AI is likely to play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of dentistry. AI should be viewed as an augmentation tool to assist dentists in carrying out more useful tasks, such as integrating patient information and strengthening professional relationships. Contemporary AI excels at using structured knowledge and gleaning understanding from vast amounts of data. However, it is unable to create associations as the human brain does, and it is only partially capable of making complicated decisions in a clinical situation. In unclear situations, specifically, higher-level comprehension that depends on dentists’ experience is necessary to conduct physical examinations, include medical histories, evaluate aesthetic results and promote conversation. It is critical to stress that good patient–dentist communication requires a non-verbal assessment of the patient’s hopes, anxieties and expectations. This is true despite the contentious debates surrounding the inclusion of empathy into algorithms for affective robots to convey artificial emotions. These communication pathways are intuitive and unplanned.
