Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) offers opportunities in many fields such as transportation, agriculture, finance, marketing, advertising, science, health, justice and security. Therefore, our lives are changing dramatically with the emergence of AI technology. AI is gaining a position in people's daily lives at a speed that no technological tool has ever reached before. For this reason, increasing the AI skills of people who do not work on AI (non-experts) becomes very important for them to be able to communicate effectively in a world with AI technologies in the future, to keep up with changing technology, to benefit from the advantages of AI and to avoid its disadvantages. At this point, the concept of AI Literacy refers to the skill set necessary for people to use AI technologies effectively and ethically (Yetişensoy & Rapoport, 2023). With this study, it is aimed to contribute to the Turkish literature and to reveal the different approaches in the definition of the concept in the studies on AI literacy published in English, and in this direction, it is aimed to examine which definitions are made on AI literacy, the distribution of definitional studies by years, country of publication, data collection tools, data analysis methods and design, what kind of theoretical road map they follow, and what emphasis is placed on the necessity of AI literacy. In line with this purpose, 57 articles and papers reached by systematic review method were analyzed through various inclusion and exclusion criteria. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data. At the validity and reliability stage, expert opinion was consulted for the thematization and coding of the data. The findings obtained within the scope of the questions of our research were reported and discussed in the results section. It was found that the differences between the definitions of AI literacy are related to the AI practices and competencies required by different disciplines, the studies were mostly conducted in 2020 and later, the most studies were conducted in the field of education, China is the country with the highest number of publications in studies on AI literacy, the road map used in the definitions is largely similar, and the research designs are close. As a result, AI literacy is defined as a set of skills that enable individuals to critically evaluate AI technologies, to have the ability to understand AI concepts and to use them in practical applications, and at the same time to use AI ethically and effectively in their daily lives and in the business world.
