Abstract
When students submit work for assessment that that they did not create themselves, unless this can be both identified and proven, the students will unfairly gain credits towards their qualification. For text-based plagiarism or collusion, even if the student has tried to disguise it, it is likely to be detected and evidenced if text matching software is used systematically to check all submissions. If it is original work that has been created for the student, typically contract cheating or use of generative AI, then it is less straightforward. The first challenge is detecting a potential breach of integrity. The second challenge is for the marker to have both the time and the will to report it. Next, the marker needs to know what evidence is needed and how to report it. There are many reasons why a marker may decide not to raise allegations. Addressing doubts and concerns like these can make a huge difference to how many cases of conduct are reported and investigated. This chapter suggests what actions can be taken within institutions to ensure that fairness and integrity prevail.
