Abstract
Abstract This chapter outlines the history of artificial intelligence, from ancient attempts to construct machines that would mirror and mimic sounds and movements of living creatures; to the twentieth-century birth of AI as a scientific research program; to the latest advances in deep learning, large language models, and generative artificial intelligence; to dreams of building human-like machine minds or artificial general intelligence (AGI). The chapter explores differences between “artificial” intelligence vs. biological intelligence and discusses how those are revealed in the limitations of today’s even most powerful AI tools. Finally, drawing on the ancient myth of Narcissus and Echo to illustrate our human vulnerability to the power of reflection, the chapter explains why the remarkable ability of these tools to mirror the nature of our own minds is so captivating to us—and so perilous.
