Abstract
Securing digital systems and human psychological well-being has become paramount in an increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI). This chapter explores the emerging field of ‘Psybersecurity’, which involves safeguarding mental health in the digital age, protecting individuals from the psychiatric consequences of technology use, and exploring the human psychological attack surface within human security. In this context, the authors focus on the interplay of trust and risk in AI. The chapter examines the implications of over- and under-trust in AI products and explores the risks of misuse, disuse, and abuse resulting from misplaced trust. This examination goes beyond the technical to include the psychological well-being of people affected by AI. The discussion outlines strategies for fostering balanced trust in AI systems, prioritising mental health and well-being. Finally, this research underscores the critical importance of Psybersecurity in the AI era, highlighting the need to protect not only digital assets but also the mental health of individuals in our increasingly technology-driven world.
