Abstract
This paper conducts a systematic literature review on the intersection of artificial intelligence and journalism, emphasizing both the potential advantages and challenges—ethical concerns and regulatory gaps—this integration presents. The review highlights current applications of AI in several journalistic areas, including content creation, audience engagement, and misinformation detection, whilst underscoring the ethical implications of AI. It identifies a notable scarcity of quantitative research and calls for a balanced methodological approach that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative methods, including large-scale surveys and qualitative techniques. Furthermore, the study highlights the lack of empirical research on AI regulation in journalism, advocating for studies that examine the value of regulatory frameworks for media ethics and journalism practice. Various thematic and methodological avenues for future research to examine the impact of AI’s evolving role in journalism are also discussed.
