Abstract
Classification of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) status is pivotal for effective breast cancer treatment. We present the application of serious games as an innovative digital pathology platform designed to train pathologists and standardize HER2 classification through online training. This platform, termed BioGames, offers comprehensive online training for the classification of HER2 status using immunohistochemically (IHC) stained histology slides. BioGames is designed to improve the diagnostic skills of pathologists through gamification and continuous feedback provided through microscopic images of IHC-stained breast tissue sections. Pathologists engage in diagnostic exercises that mimic real-world scenarios covering HER2 scores of 0/1+/2+/3+, allowing them to refine their skills in a controlled environment. The platform tracks their performance, identifies areas for improvement, and offers targeted feedback to ensure continuous learning and improvement. Ultimately, this could contribute to better patient management and outcomes, as accurate HER2 status determination is crucial for breast cancer treatment.
