Abstract
This chapter explores the ethical implications of using artificial intelligence (AI) to augment human intelligence in qualitative social science research. A lack of clear guidelines, standards and AI specific research training presents a high risk of ethical breaches in this new and rapidly developing area. The chapter explores the intersection of AI, ethics and qualitative research, highlighting the critical role of human oversight and accountability. It systematically addresses key ethical principles – respect for individuals, confidentiality, integrity, beneficence and justice – illustrated with real-world and hypothetical examples. The chapter concludes with best-practice guidelines for ethical AI augmented social science qualitative research, and emphasizes the importance of iterative critical engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration. These guidelines aim to help researchers navigate the ethical complexities of AI and ensure that their work upholds the rights of participants.
