Abstract

This book chapter aims to establish the generative AI ChatGPT (GPT 3.5) as a valid source for active learning in higher education settings, based on fundamental educational and learning theories that describe efficient active learning methodologies and techniques. The research methodology aims to perform qualitative comparisons of ChatGPT and its various functionalities with the principles of the discussed learning theories. The prompts given to ChatGPT play an important role in how well the AI acts as a learning resource, the quality of the prompt is directly related to the quality of the response given by the AI. Various Prompt Experiments have been included in our case studies that showcase prompts given to the AI and the response received. These experiments will help in consolidating the comparisons between the working of the AI and the principles of the learning theories. Lastly, the chapter discusses the various deficiencies of ChatGPT (GPT 3.5) that need to be taken cautiously when using it as a tool for higher education.
