Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses the implications of emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), for work design theory and practice. Emphasizing the urgency for work design experts to join ongoing efforts to proactively shape the future of work, the chapter highlights three streams of literature and the opportunities for work design research and practice arising in each: (1) expand knowledge on the impact of technology on job quality in view of the rapidly growing capabilities of AI and apply this knowledge in AI development and implementation; (2) widen the remit of work design research and practice by studying changes in occupations, not only jobs, and the overall meaning and necessity of human work in an era of massive productivity gains through AI; and (3) examine challenges for human-centered AI stemming from working conditions for technology developers themselves and develop work design principles that facilitate user-aware technology development and implementation. The chapter proposes a set of research questions and practical considerations in these three domains to serve researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in navigating the changing landscape of work in the age of AI.
