Abstract
Controversies arising from the application of AI across many facets of our lives are mainly based on the manner in which the AI arrived at a particular decision. This chapter deals in detail with the specific ethical issues that arise from the use of artificial intelligence decision-making from the perspective of the user. It discusses the interaction between technology and ethics and also defines how certain forms of AI influence certain individuals. The first part of the chapter offers a general overview of the kind of ethical concern that arises due to the involvement of AI in decision-making, emphasizing such values as accountability, transparency, and equity. It then narrows down to how these moral values are reflected in the user experience, understanding the impact of AI choices on people's autonomy, privacy, and trust. Another point mentioned in the discussion is that those AI algorithms can be biased, meaning they may contribute to the strengthening of existing social injustices without the intention of doing so. The chapter on algorithmic bias examines the ethical issues later on and explores measures to mitigate those effects on underprivileged users. Another topic worth considering is the fact that algorithms often integrate prejudice into themselves, and thus, they can unconsciously make existing discriminations even worse. The chapter examines the ethical concerns raised by algorithmic bias and outlines the measures to reduce the nefarious effects on vulnerable categories of users; this entails a discussion of algorithmic bias and examines ways of reducing the significant adverse effects of algorithmic bias on vulnerable user groups.
