Abstract
Biobanks are used to assess the ethical, legal, and societal implications as integral and intangible parts of their governance. They are used to incorporate new technologies and regulations in their organizational practices, which operate at the intersection of healthcare and health research. By integrating the expectations of artificial intelligence and machine learning while balancing the risks, they establish trustworthy environments. In relation to AI systems, biobanks have both the experience and awareness necessary for the handling of sensitive data. This effort remains a challenge and requires an interdisciplinary effort from ELSI experts as well as computer scientists, biobankers, patient advocacy, etc. Especially, as highlighted in this chapter, if the goal is to ensure and maintain fair access and sustainability of publicly funded healthcare and research infrastructures.
