Choices of Generative AI tools among Chinese college students and influencing factors in second language learning

Abstract

This study aims to examine the choices made by college students about the generative AI tools involved in their second language (L2) learning. We collected questionnaire data on students’ majors, L2 proficiency, their choices of Generative AI tools, the factors affecting their choices, and the changes in their choices. Results reveal that DeepSeek, Qwen, and IFLYTEK SPARK are currently getting higher recognition in college students' L2 learning. Social factors and the functions of the tools maximally affect their choice. The influence of personal experience is larger than that of social factors (e.g., recommendations from classmates or faculty), suggesting that the tool attributes are the primary reference for making choices. This study can provide empirical evidence to support technology-enhanced L2 teaching and learning and institutional policies in this regard.
