Abstract
Sub-Saharan Africa presents a unique landscape with challenges and opportunities for leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health care. The region is home to diverse cultures, languages, and socioeconomic conditions, all influencing the approach to mental health. Mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, affect approximately 5% of the population, representing a significant public health concern (World Health Organization, 2021). The limited availability of mental health professionals exacerbates the burden of these disorders. For example, Nigeria has a mere 0.15 psychiatrists per 100,000 people, and the ratio is similarly low in other countries across the region, indicating a severe shortage of mental health resources (World Health Organization, 2021).
