Abstract

In today’s rapidly growing world, generative AI has found its use-cases in a multitude of domains. Its impact in the mental healthcare field is of special interest. With the rising need for mental and emotional health services, the traditional therapy industry can be effectively transformed and enhanced using generative AI in various ways. The proposed chapter is an overview of the opportunities and adversities faced on implementing generative AI into the mental healthcare industry. First, different technologies used in the industry like natural language processing (NLP), machine learning (ML) and deep learning are studied, then the various ways in which generative AI is leveraged into the industry for patient and clinician/mental health provider support are studied. Further, the chapter explores the current mental health app market for effective AI tools accessible by the general public. The chapter 148also analyzes the potency of utilizing the popular LLM model, Chat-GPT for treatment of mental health issues and support. Moreover, the necessity of ensuring safety and responsible use of AI in the domain is highlighted considering the ethical challenges and the intricacies of human cognition.
