Abstract
Organizational knowledge creation (KC) is a cornerstone of sustained competitive advantage. AI-powered digital tools have transformed KC by enabling the virtual sharing of tacit knowledge, traditionally confined to physical spaces. However, adoption of these tools remains limited due to concerns over proprietary data protection, organizational inertia, and algorithmic aversion. Addressing this gap, we investigate how companies can leverage AI-based ecosystems to foster knowledge creation while safeguarding their competitive advantage. Using a multiple case study in the healthcare industry, we analyze the interactions among actors within an AI platform-based ecosystem. Drawing on over 30 semi-structured interviews with diverse stakeholders, we propose a framework that captures knowledge and information flows. This framework identifies strategies for knowledge creation enabled through AI-based software, highlighting the critical role of the ecosystem view in supporting these processes. Our findings contribute to the AI management literature by demonstrating how effective KC depends on the ecosystem surrounding the software. This integrated perspective advances our understanding of how AI-based tools facilitate knowledge creation and offers actionable insights for scholars, managers, and policymakers.
