Abstract
Advanced algorithms and sophisticated sensors now enable the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)—a procedure crucial for patients facing cardiac arrest. Previous work laid the groundwork for the theory and technology supporting AI-augmented CPR. The goal is to significantly enhance the chance of survival and recovery for emergency cardiac arrest patients. The performance of some specific subprocesses, from initial recognition and decision-making onwards, can be improved using an intelligent design. Of course, realization of this potential will depend on the willingness of the community to accept the accompanying constraints and responsibilities. The implications of AI-enhanced CPR could be considerable. When the fully integrated architecture of data collection, processing, and feedback is achieved, the avenues for improvement in cardiopulmonary resuscitation will multiply. Beyond CPR, the approach widely applies to other time-sensitive, collaborative medical interventions, such as major trauma, obstetric emergencies, and overdose.
