The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence in Media

Abstract
The production and distribution of news is quickly being restructured by artificial intelligence. With media companies increasingly using AI to provide faster and more personalized content, the field has emerged as a point of interest to academic study. Up to date, there is no bibliometric research that would survey the development of the field, its geographic dispersion, or thematic trends. The current analysis fills this gap as it considers the publications between 2000 and 2024, retrieving the data in Scopus, using VOSviewer to visualize it, and resorting to Bibliometrix to conduct quantitative analysis. The research assesses the productivity of research by the h-index and lists top authors, institutions, and countries. Moreover, the paper employs co-occurrence networks and thematic mapping to point out emerging topics, ethical aspects, and technological challenges. Altogether, the results give a general picture that can inform future studies on AI-based journalism.
