Abstract

Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the universal convergence that transforms libraries into vibrant intelligent information environments instead of being a repository. It is one of the significant technological changes that could be applied in Pakistan to modernize library facilities, but it is unclear how fast and on what extent it will be adopted because of financial, technical, and institutional barriers. Objectives: This study aimed to: (1) assess the awareness of AI among library professionals in Pakistan; (2) examine the extent of AI application in library operations; (3) analyze its impact on modernization and efficiency; (4) identify major implementation challenges; and (5) explore future readiness and perceptions. Methods: The quantitative, descriptive survey design was used. Purposive sampling was used to send a structured questionnaire to library professionals working in the academic and the public sector in Pakistan. Descriptive statistics were used in data analysis to produce frequencies and percentages which were represented in figures. Findings: The results indicated that there was a high level of awareness and a positive attitude to the potential of AI to make the process of cataloging, search accuracy, and personalized services better. AI was perceived to be a great way of making operations more efficient and satisfying to the user. Nevertheless, the key obstacles were listed, among which intense funding limitations (81.1%), lack of technical skills (81.1%), and inefficient infrastructure (77.2%) were included. There is also a significant divergence between an individual willingness to implement AI that is high (81.1%) and institutional preparedness (63.3% that is moderate). Conclusion: The professionals in the Pakistan libraries are ready to adopt AI since they know that AI has the ability to revolutionize the libraries. Systemic institutional and resource barriers, however, limit widespread adoption. The study suggests the use of strategic investments in the areas of continuous professional development, technological infrastructure, enabling policy frameworks, and joint pilot projects to remove this gap, so as to make full use of AI to modernize library services in the digital era.
