Abstract
Abstract Prompting has emerged as one of the principal ways for humans to interact with Generative AI systems. Coming up with suitable prompts to control what the AI produces may appear as an art that needs to be mastered. This chapter provides an overview of the theory and practice of prompting, covering the different kinds of prompts that are used in AI and the origins of prompting as an emergent phenomenon in early large language models. It reviews basic prompt engineering strategies as well as techniques such as chain-of-thought prompting and automatic prompt optimization. Notable risks of prompt-controlled AI systems are as well considered, including jailbreaks, data leakage, and prompt injection attacks. The chapter concludes with the question of whether prompt engineering will continue to play a major role in future AI systems.
