Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Public Libraries: A Systematic Review

Abstract
Purpose: This research aimed to identify and explore the key applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in public libraries.Methods: A systematic review method was used to achieve the research objective. After searching the Iranian and global databases, 42 documents related to the subject of this research were identified. The documents were studied, and the key applications of AI in public libraries were extracted from their full text.Results: The findings showed that public libraries can benefit from the potential of AI in six different areas: (1) collection management, AI can identify user needs and optimize the life cycle of resources; (2) information organization, AI can assign index terms, prepare summaries, and digitize works; (3) information retrieval, these technologies can help with multimedia search, heterogeneous and multilingual information exploration; (4) user services section, AI can improve the user experience through information consulting, assistant robots, and sentiment analysis; (5) library space and equipment, AI can provide a more pleasant space for users; and (6) management and maintenance, AI can managers make the best use of available resources. Altogether, 66 different applications for AI in public libraries were identified.Conclusion:. To sustain the life of public libraries and keep pace with the development of smart cities, these institutions must utilize AI to increase efficiency and user attraction as well as personalize services. This is faced with challenges such as costs, privacy, and the readiness of libraries, but its positive effects on the quality, equity, and innovation of library services will be evident.
