Abstract
This chapter explores the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on the arts and the humanities (A&H), highlighting possibilities, limitations and pitfalls. The study reveals that while areas of the A&H like language teaching, choreography of dance, analysis of picture and field data, retrieval and restoration of old yellowed manuscripts and interpretation of tangible and intangible historical pieces have possibilities of being greatly impacted by the use of such AI-assisted/driven delicate devices like Computer vision, algorithmic writing and text mining tools like ‘ChatGPT’, ‘Copy ai’, ‘Grammarly’, ‘Dall-e 3’, ‘Alli AI’, ‘Jasper’, ‘Midjourney’, etc., AI has not been able to effectively replace the ‘artist’ or the ‘humanist’ as the creator with ‘God-like’ creative potentialities. ‘Inspiration’ and ‘the esemplastic imagination’ of the creative artist remain anecdotal to AI. The core creative and expressive aspects of the A&H remain outside the purview of AI. Using qualitative research methodology, this chapter agrees with the view that AI has not only greatly impacted many areas of the A&H but also has created many possibilities among the students, researchers, teachers and entrepreneurs in the field of the aforementioned faculties. However, the possibilities this wonderful tool has created will be translated into reality and will help human civilization to advance towards its desired goals, only if we are aware of the pitfalls of the use of AI and make judicious use of this latest invention of science and technology.
