Abstract

Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the Indian healthcare sector by addressing the unique challenges posed by the country’s large and diverse population. This review highlights the impact and potential of AI in healthcare, key areas where AI is making a substantial impact, challenges, and future directions. AI-driven diagnostic systems, utilizing advanced deep learning architectures, are enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of medical image analysis, particularly in regions with a high disease burden. Personalized medicine applications, employing machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks, integrate multi-modal patient datasets to develop individualized therapeutic strategies. AI is expediting the drug discovery and development pipeline through computational molecular modeling, predictive pharmacology, and drug repositioning. Remote patient monitoring, facilitated by AI-integrated wearable sensor platforms and mobile health applications, enables continuous physiological monitoring and proactive clinical intervention. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and India’s robust Digital Public Infrastructure are crucial enablers for data-driven healthcare delivery. Telemedicine platforms, such as e-Sanjeevani, are bridging geographical barriers and providing healthcare to millions. Future trends in digital healthcare include accelerated AI integration, expansion of telemedicine services, development of digital health ecosystems, emphasis on data-driven healthcare, and global collaboration and standardization. However, challenges such as data confidentiality and cybersecurity, digital inclusion and infrastructure development, interoperability and data exchange standards, and ethical governance of AI in healthcare must be addressed to ensure equitable and effective implementation. By implementing comprehensive mitigation strategies and adhering to rigorous regulatory frameworks, India can leverage the full potential of digital healthcare technologies to enhance the health outcomes of its diverse populace and serve as a pioneering model for global healthcare transformation.
