Abstract
AI is being hailed the most profound drivers of innovation and global economic growth but at the same time it elicits deep concerns with respect to social justice. These biases in AI systems which may have been encoded by historical data or faulty algorithms can perpetuate discrimination in crucial domains, such as hiring, credit allocations, policing and health care. It will require weaving fairness, transparency and accountability into all stages of developing AI. Ethical safeguards, diverse datasets and frequent audits are all critical to prevent AI decisions from mirroring existing structural inequalities. Encouraging cross-disciplinary cooperation between technologists, social scientists, policy makers and marginalized communities can help to ensure that AI future is empowering rather than of exclusion. Through establishing legal protections and ensuring equitable access to AI technologies, society can harness AI to drive fairness and inclusivity, making it a means for true social justice and not for exclusion.
