Abstract
<title>UNSTRUCTURED</title> Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping healthcare and counseling by simulating human cognitive processes and enabling increasingly natural language interactions. Within the counseling field, AI applications such as chatbots, predictive analytics, and natural language processing are emerging as tools for early detection of mental health concerns, delivery of real-time support, and automation of clinical tasks (Torous et al., 2025). While AI cannot replicate human empathy, its thoughtful integration may expand access, reduce systemic barriers, and improve outcomes for underserved populations. One often overlooked application lies in supporting executive functioning among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Challenges in planning, working memory, and self-regulation significantly impact independence and life satisfaction in this population (Fidler & Lanfranchi, 2022). AI-driven supports, including adaptive scheduling and cognitive training tools, hold promise for fostering autonomy, particularly within inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) contexts. This review examines AI’s evolving role in counseling, emphasizing ethical integration and its potential to augment human-centered care.
