Abstract

Abstract The Indian judiciary plays a vital role in upholding constitutional governance and the rule of law; however, it continues to face significant administrative and financial challenges, including limited budgetary control, increasing caseloads, and operational inefficiencies. While judicial independence is constitutionally recognized, financial autonomy of the judiciary remains constrained by dependence on the executive for budget approval and resource allocation. Achieving genuine financial autonomy therefore requires not only legal or constitutional recognition but also strong administrative capacity, transparency, and accountability. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents a promising opportunity to strengthen judicial administration and financial governance. This paper examines the potential application of AI in judicial administration with specific reference to enhancing the financial autonomy of the Indian judiciary. It explores how AI-driven tools such as predictive budgeting, workload analytics, resource optimization, automated financial reporting, and anomaly detection can support evidence-based decision-making and efficient financial management. By enabling accurate forecasting, transparent allocation of resources, and effective monitoring of expenditures, AI can help courts demonstrate fiscal responsibility and institutional competence. The study adopts a qualitative and conceptual research approach, drawing upon judicial reform literature, governance studies, and emerging scholarship on AI in public administration. It also identifies legal, ethical, and institutional challenges associated with AI adoption, including data quality, algorithmic transparency, privacy concerns, and organizational readiness. The paper argues that responsible and well-governed implementation of AI in judicial administration can significantly strengthen the institutional foundation for judicial financial autonomy, thereby reinforcing judicial independence and improving the overall efficiency of the justice delivery system.
