Abstract

Consider a molecular biologist exploring transcriptomic data through an AI interface. A simple query about an expression outlier triggers a cascade of speculative exchanges—rapid, iterative, and dialogical. For the first time, researchers can engage in sustained, dialogical exchanges with computational systems. AI—particularly large language models (LLMs)—has turned computation into dialog [1]. This shift marks a deeper epistemic reconfiguration: reasoning becomes dialogical, evolving through feedback between representation and interpretation. In philosophical terms, LLMs function as mediating artifacts that shape what can be inferred and how hypotheses are articulated [2]. Where past generations of scholars had to master the syntax of code or statistical languages, today’s scientists can explore ideas in plain language, asking why as easily as how. Until recently, the rhythm of research followed a linear path: read the literature, form a hypothesis, design the experiment, publish the results [3].
