Abstract

Generative AI (GAI) enterprise solutions (such as Microsoft 365 Copilot and ChatGPT Enterprise) may finally allow organizations to leverage the power of this technology in their internal, protected, environment. But the introduction of GAI at work may prospect additional workplace surveillance risks for employees. Drawing from a sample of 50 semi structured interviews from a pilot project in a private organization, this study explores how employees perceive and deal with the workplace surveillance potential of GAI at work. With our findings, we challenge the established vision of workplace surveillance as dyadic human to human relationship by proposing a surveillance triage, where the GAI platform is perceived as an additional observee. We also contribute to the literature on algorithmic surveillance by arguing that GAI enables algorithmic surveillance to be applied to non-platform mediated organizations. Finally, we provide theoretical insights on how employees perceive and react to this new surveillance agent.
