Abstract
This chapter examines how generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can transform course design and development in higher education. It explores how GenAI can address common challenges in course development, including limited resources, accessibility needs, and scalability issues. The chapter provides concrete applications of GenAI across the course development lifecycle, from initial planning and needs assessment to content creation and assessment design. It discusses how GenAI can serve as a collaborative partner in creating more inclusive, personalized learning experiences while maintaining human-centered design principles. Also addressed are critical implementation challenges, including equity concerns, bias mitigation, privacy considerations, and the need for strategic leadership in GenAI adoption. Drawing on current research and emerging practices, the authors provide practical guidance for institutional leaders on integrating GenAI tools while fostering innovation and maintaining ethical standards.
