Abstract

Digital health research has not translated and disrupted health care practice as much as expected, or desired. Studies on the translation of digital health research to practice have identified privacy concerns, paternalistic healthcare practices, researcher and practitioner skill sets, and investment funding, as explanatory factors. This article presents an autoethnographic inquiry based on the author’s lived experience conducting digital health research in Australia and experiences managing two university spin-out companies over thirty years. Insights from the inquiry suggest an under utilized concept of “goodwill” defined as acts displayed by one entity in an ecosystem to advance the aims of another entity, can be an important ecosystem-wide factor relevant for the translation of digital health research to practice. The analysis suggests that the barriers to translational research can be reduced if stakeholders in a digital health ecosystem act to advance the aims of other stakeholders.
