Abstract
This paper explores how artificial intelligence (AI), especially tools such as ChatGPT, can support the work of donor relations in development without replacing the human element that makes such work meaningful. Through firsthand examples, this paper describes how AI was initially adopted out of necessity and gradually became part of everyday tasks such as drafting acknowledgment letters, planning project timelines and analysing data. Each of the paper’s sections analyses how AI can help save time, strengthen development communications and create space for more intentional relationship-building with donors and colleagues. The paper also reflects on the ethical considerations that come with these tools, including privacy, transparency and the importance of maintaining a consistent and authentic voice. Rather than presenting AI as a solution to every challenge, the piece frames it as a practical support system for teams aiming to work more efficiently while remaining grounded in values such as gratitude and care.
