Abstract
This study explores the perceptions and experiences of learners using an AI chatbot in the context of an online professional course. The chatbot was implemented using the SAGE-RAI (Smart Assessment and Guided Education with Responsible AI) framework, which emphasises responsible AI design for transparent and curriculum-grounded conversational agents. Using a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews with adult learners were thematically analysed and three themes emerged: (1) AI as a Learning Enabler, (2) The Human-AI Partnership, and (3) Boundaries, Ethics, and Responsible Use. Learners viewed the chatbot as a valuable companion that enhanced efficiency, accessibility, and learner autonomy. The study offers practical guidance for designing AI tools that complement human teaching, foster trust, and promote ethical awareness. Institutions are encouraged to develop governance frameworks and professional development initiatives that embed transparency, accountability, and inclusivity into AI-enhanced teaching practices.
