Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has changed the way the world governs. It has a lot of possibilities for the optimum utilisation of resources, better service delivery, and accurate decision-making. AI in the Indian context could help address the challenges of 1.4 billion people in various important sectors like healthcare, agriculture, teaching, and infrastructure. The government of India is attempting to position and project India as a global leader in AI technologies by launching various policies and initiatives to integrate AI into governance. In any case, combining AI into governance raises ethical, social, and security concerns. This chapter delves into examining the recent history and development of AI policy in India and how a certain body can use AI tools for effective and efficient governance. It also discusses the growing need and resistance to adopting AI in India, analysing the concerns raised by policymakers and industry experts regarding AI ethics, security risks, privacy concerns, and other societal concerns, by looking at examples and evaluating case studies, government policies, and rules. Ultimately, this chapter seeks to offer valuable insight into the way forward and suggest balanced policy approaches to minimise the risk and maximise the benefit associated with the use of AI in governance, thereby paving the path for inclusive and responsible integration of AI technologies in the Indian governance framework.
