Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool in language education, offering innovative methods for personalized and interactive learning. This study explores the psychological and motivational factors influencing AI-assisted language learning (AI-ALL) among young Filipino adults. Using a phenomenological qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants (ages 20-22) who have engaged in AI-based language learning for at least six months. Thematic analysis revealed key insights into learners’ experiences, including enhanced learning efficiency, increased motivation and the impact of AI-ALL on self-esteem and self-efficacy. Findings indicate that AI-ALL fosters a positive learning environment by offering personalized feedback, repetition-based retention and reduced anxiety in language acquisition. However, challenges such as lack of conversational practice, occasional frustration with AI-generated feedback and skepticism regarding AI reliability were also noted. This study highlights the need for AI-ALL systems to integrate more interactive dialogue features and human-like engagement to address these gaps. By understanding the psychological dimensions of AI-ALL, this research provides insights for improving AI-based educational tools to optimize user experience and learning outcomes.
