Abstract
This study investigates Japanese university students’ perceptions of a commercially available AI chatbot designed for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking practice. Over six weeks, five students participated in weekly conversations with an AI avatar. Pre- and post-tests aligned with the CEFR scale, along with surveys and reflections, were used to explore perceived difficulty, satisfaction, and overall impressions. Results indicate that higher-proficiency learners found the sessions easier and reported high satisfaction, while lower-proficiency learners described them as challenging and less satisfying. Students highlighted perceived gains in listening, grammar, and speaking confidence, but also experience instances when communication broke down or responses seemed unnatural. Based on the results, several topics for further research are proposed for the emerging field of EFL AI chatbots such as the impact on learners’ body language and expressiveness by communicating with a visible avatar.
