Abstract
Artificial intelligence is transforming software engineering skills, creating deskilling risks while highlighting urgent reskilling imperatives and evolving workforce pathways. This chapter per the authors examines the adoption of intelligent code generation, automated testing, and AI-assisted development tools, showing how these technologies reshape programming practices, cognitive demands, and professional identities. It explores the tension between productivity gains and the potential loss of foundational competencies, emphasizing adaptive skill frameworks that integrate computational thinking, system-level reasoning, and human–AI collaboration. Organizational and educational responses, including continuous learning, industry–academia partnerships, and competency-based training, are discussed to future-proof the workforce. The chapter synthesizes research and industry trends to outline strategies for resilient, ethically grounded, and innovation-oriented software engineering roles in the age of AI.
