Using Norms To Facilitate The Multiple Functions of the Electronic Health Record

Abstract

Norms are standard forms for action, presentation and interpretation. They are human factors that allow actors in a group or discipline to maintain shared understanding. Norms have been elaborated in law, ethics and even software engineering, but are new to health informatics. Here we introduce the norm concept in relation to the use of clinical records, using examples from standardisation and radiology reporting.
