Abstract
Artificial neural networks use a process known as backward propagation to learn how to classify sounds, images, text, or other data by identifying characteristics within a training dataset. Talent acquisition and selection are the areas that Artificial Intelligence (AI) appears to be making the most immediate impact in. Traditionally, organisations’ internal talent management programs have been rather elitist. A relatively small group of employees are identified as ‘high potential talent’ and then are hothoused through talent development programs that are designed to give them the breadth of skills, experience, support, and networks to advance to senior leadership positions in the future. AIs require large volumes of high-quality data for training purposes. The availability of data is not in itself enough to facilitate the development of AI for talent management. Wider societal concerns about the ethics of data use and decision-making are encoded in national legal systems; therefore, employers are risking more than their reputation if they get AI wrong.
