Abstract
Introduction: Medical innovation has led to discoveries on how to prevent and cure many illnesses. As a result, millions of people have lived longer, healthier, and more productively. Much of the progress Medicine has made during the past years is due to the rapid development of medical device technologies. The aim of the study is to identify the main areas of medical innovations where medical devices play significant role during the last 5 years. Materials and methods: We used PubMed for our search and limited the search period to 2013-2017. The key words used were top medical innovations and medical devices. Then we continued the search accordingly with new key words based on the topics identified in the articles found. Results: As many as 340 records were associated with medical innovations and medical devices. Most intensively discussed topics were as follows: innovations in the management of cardiovascular diseases (16.47%), telemedicine & monitoring devices (5.0%), orthopaedic care (incl. trauma care and bone regeneration) (4.41%), 3D-printing (2.70%) and innovations in digital heath (2.0%). Topics such as health technology assessment of medical devices, regulatory issues (incl. clinical trials and post-approval studies), neurosurgery etc. were discussed to a lesser extent. Most innovations were implants for the treatment of advanced heart failure, devices for myocardial recovery, drug-releasing stents, ventricular assist device (VAD) systems, cardiac and vascular tissue engineering etc. Conclusions: Cardiology is rapidly developing on many levels including the application of innovative medical devices. Another recent development is the innovations applied for frequent or continuous monitoring of human vital signs such as body temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, pulse oxygenation, and blood glucose etc. Recent advances have demonstrated the potential of 3D printing in urology, human skin constructs, reconstructive oral surgery, developing personalized implants in cardiology etc.
