Abstract
This entry provides an overview of the definitions, technological platforms, communication technologies, and noncomputerized tools of clinical decision support systems (CDSS). CDSS are systems that provide advice to those who make decisions. CDSS improve the decision‐making process by offering several recommendations that are uniquely tailored to each specific patient, and these recommendations guide clinicians to improve their decisions during treatments, drug diagnosis, and medical adherence. Different types of CDSS including knowledge‐based, non‐knowledge‐based, and function‐based are also discussed. CDSS have advantages and disadvantages that need to be considered in the healthcare field. Future research needs to continue to investigate the effectiveness of CDSS using health communication theories and factors, and qualitative methodologies.
