Bridging the Gap Between Technology and Medicine: Approaches of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Abstract

Artificial intelligence has been an emerging technology over the past decade. The applications of artificial intelligence have shown tremendous developments in the various sectors of healthcare, particularly in biomedicine, biomedical research, biomedical information processing, drug discovery and design, and disease diagnosis. With the enormous increase in electronic health records, artificial intelligence and its technological advancement have provided an opportunity for improving healthcare. The results shown by artificial intelligence in various fields of medicine have been astonishing. Machine learning has great potential in increasing the quality of healthcare by increasing its efficiency. Despite the developments and greater potential of AI research in the field of healthcare, ethical concerns and other challenges induced by the AI applications need to be addressed. Nowadays, healthcare organizations are more interested in finding out how AI can be used to improve patients' health, which in turn will reduce costs and enhance efficiency. This book chapter illustrates the applications of AI in the healthcare sector and different machine learning algorithms. Also, the ethical challenges faced while using AI technologies are discussed. It is still believed that AI in biomedicine is in its early stage. The progress of AI research will continue to push the frontiers of AI applications. The breakthroughs of AI also describe a roadmap for building reliable, effective, and safe AI systems. Also, it will guide us into the possible future direction in healthcare systems.
